Aussie Rules Finals Series |
|
| |
Looking for a bit of exciting local Aussie Rules footy action,
then why not get yourself down to the upcoming 2006 British Australian
Rules Football League (BARFL) Final Series commencing on Saturday
19th August at Clapham Common?
Active Antipodean.com is once again excited with the prospect of
working closely with the BARFL to promote this wonderful 3 weeks
of Aussie Rules Football in London!
The Semi Finals weekend, to be played Saturday 19th & Sunday
20th August, both at Clapham Common, will see some exciting action.
On Saturday the 19th the mighty Wimbledon Hawks take on North London.
If the Hawks win, they will play the loser of the Wandsworth v West
London game in the Preliminary Final. The Prelim Final will be played
at Albert Park Reserve in Bounds Green on Saturday 26th August.
If the Hawks win that match, they are through to the Grand Final
for the 3rd year in a row.
The BARFL Grand Final will be played on Saturday 2nd September
at Clapham Common, which is always a highlight on the London sporting
calendar and, weather permitting, should attract a few thousand
spectators.
Last year the Hawks were beaten narrowly, in what many say was
the most exciting Grand Final played in the BARFLs history,
and they are out for revenge in this years finals campaign.
During the finals series, the conference games (Reserves) will
commence at 12.30 & the Premiership (Senior Game) will be at
3pm.
In the senior game 50% of the players have to be European so there
will be a large local interest in the Grand Final as well as a massive
antipodean based crowd at the common for what is always a fantastic
sporting experience!
The BARFL Grand Final is always a great day on the London sporting
calendar, with last year attracting a crowd of over 3000. This years
event promises to be even bigger, with the day including a netball
tournament, guest appearances from sporting celebrities, the famous
Half Time Clapham Dash for Cash, heaps of travel giveaways,
a junior game of Aussie Rules involving local 12 year old English
kids, and best of all the high flying Aussie Rules Grand Final Action,
as well as ice cold VB beers, and the good old Aussie BBQ!
Clapham
Common is the nearest tube!

Zeus
Testiclemonial |

There comes a time when all sportsmen
must call it a day and sadly retire from their chosen sport. For some
this day is premature, due to injuries, non sporting commitments,
loss of spirit, sudden lack of skill, misguided professionalism (a
pisshead). However for some this day is well overdue.
These are the sort of sportsmen that just can't get enough of it.
These blokes just don't realise how slow their bodies have got and
age is meaningless to them. Much like the high numbers on their backs,
reflective
of the fact they now only get a run in the 2nd's.
But nevertheless we must pay tribute to these sportsmen. They were
the ones that taught us how to play and kept the game going for
us to enjoy today. So the Wimbledon Hawks would like to paid tribute
to their clubs Old Fellas in a final TESTIMONIAL game this Saturday
12th August at West London Wildcats
home ground 11.30am against the Ealing Emu's.
For those keen to pay tribute to this great group of players, here's
is the official/unofficial line ups. Some of these Old Boys actually
retired years ago but are making a final comeback to play their
last one with the Doctor aka Zeus (Nathan Tilley) who called it
his retirement game a few weeks ago. There will surely be a few
BARFL age records broken on Saturday.

Congratulations to Tony and Fiona
Wallbridge
Tony and Fiona are now proud parents as Fiona gave birth to Snowy
Wombat Jnr (Sam Anthony Wallbridge). He entered the world a whopping
7.9lb and here are the old mans comments.
he is going to have my broad shoulders, tight bum, muscle
legs. The only point of difference is he has more hair than me the
little pr*ck. If he has my good looks and charm he will do just
fine.
Special comments from the Ex-Pres. Super effort that!
From all the Hawks Family, we wish the Wallbridge family the very
best of luck for the future.

2004
Premiership |
|
| |
The Wimbledon Hawks ended
their 2004 Premiership campaign on Saturday 21st August following
a spirited performance, but had to be content as runners-up. The preparation
was perfect and the boys were fuelled up and focussed on the day.
Before the game the team stuck together (including supporters) at
the ground and soaked up the buzz created by a carnival Grand Final
atmosphere; tents erected, sausages sizzling and music blaring in
the background. A team talk before the game and a warm up followed,
the highlight being the national anthem with the Hawks and
West London lined up facing each other and the blood was boiling.
The first quarter started with the Hawks aggressive at the
ball, hitting packs hard and piling the pressure on the Wildcats.
A number of big body clashes resulted with Nigel Webb, John White
(Chalky) and Michael Preston (Pistol) leading the charge in an opening
reminiscent of the Hawthorn Hawks v Geelong Cats 1989 AFL Grand
Final, only with the roles reversed. The Hawks were damaging
bodies whilst the Cats were damaging on the scoreboard.
Webbie started exceptionally well but unfortunately was sent off
after 11 minutes for the remainder of the first quarter after showing
controlled aggression. The field umpire appeared to be swayed by
West London players yelling "do your job", understandable
gamesmanship in a Grand Final. One would think the umpire might
have understood a harmless bit of push and shove in the last game
of the season but that wasn't to be. Dave Stockham, Phuwani Hetherington,
James Teader and Jonny Hazelden were others to start well whilst
as usual, league B&F Sam Parkinson was exerting his influence
around the ground.
The second quarter saw the Hawks trying hard and showing
complete desparation but not getting the score on the board. The
Wildcats 3 key forwards were taking strong marks and kicking goals
which saw them get out to a 6 goal lead. After half time the Hawks
pulled back, kicking a couple of goals in a row and showing real
character with Mark Hoggard and Ben Vaughan keeping the Wildcats
talls at bay and John Frenken and Tim Garrett using the ball well.
Nathan Mackie was also doing his best and threw himself around like
a rag doll and Simon Bishop was showing plenty across half forward.
In the end, it just wasn't enough and the last quarter saw the
Wildcats run away with the game. It was for lack of effort on the
Hawks part, it was simply lack of ability. Going into the
game the Hawks believed they could win and were in the right
frame of mind, particularly if their attack and desire was anything
to go by, but the Wildcats were also on song and proved to be too
good. The Hawks fought it out to the end with Parko, Chalky,
Webby and Pistol continuing to dish out the hits and make sure the
Wildcats "paid the price".
I was disappointed to lose but not unhappy with the way we played.
I was extremely proud of the boys for the way they played today
and the way we went about our business this year. We prepared well,
we knew we were a chance if they were even slightly down, we wanted
it, we did our best and battled at every contest but they were just
too good. If we lost because we didn't have a go I would be disappointed
but we had a red hot dip and were beaten on ability. There is no
shame in that and I look back on a successful year both on and off
the field with nothing but fond memories. Sam won the BARFL best
in the league, we beat every team but West London, who were undefeated
all year, and we played in a Grand Final and had a real chance to
win. It would have been nice to cap the season off with a win but
we weren't good enough. Hopefully we can recruit well in the off
season and go one better next year.
The Hawks finished the year with their presentation day
Sunday 22nd run by Tim Hawes, Nick Katsivelos and yours truly and
it was one of the funniest in years, the speeches absolute Gold
and the Powerpoint presentation showing up sides of the boys and
girls not many want to see. I would like to congratulate all trophy
winners and life members on their outstanding achievements in 2004.
On the day outgoing President Tim Hawes, who is leaving the UK
and setting in Sydney with wife Tracey, was awarded an autographed
Number 1 jumper to recognise 7 years outstanding service to the
Hawks. Tim, a life member and Centre Half Back in the 1998
Premiership side, will be sorely missed at the club level and as
a friend/drinking parter. We all wish Tim and Tracey the best.
On behalf of the Fulham and Wimbledon Hawks I would like
to thank our sponsors and all members of the Hawks family
all over the world for their best wishes and support in 2004. In
particular Nick Katsivelos (clubman of the year 3 years running),
Gavin Tilley (runs the web site and has it looking very professional),
Gareth Martin (Treasurer), Jonny Hazelden (Social), Dave Stockham
(EU Rep), Jeremy Hersch (Social), Brucey Williams (captain of the
Scoreboard), Mike Hazelden (Social), Nigel Webb (club captain and
Social), those who helped with the BBQ (Brett/Sam/Casey), water
boys, boundary umpires, goal umpires and Tim Hawes for their tireless
work help in keeping the club running off the field. Without the
support of Grant and Brooksy at the Walkabout Wimbledon the Hawks
would struggle to survive, so let's continue to support them at
every opportunity.
I would also like to send a farewell BUT NOT A GOODBYE to a few
club legends ===> Sammy, Webby, Shimma and the Octopus (Drew)
who unfortunately won't be with the Hawks in 2005. Needless to say
there are some big shoes to fill. We wish them well in their future
endeavours and look forward to catching up with them back in AUS.
Season 2004 was a fantastic year for the Hawks, highlights including;
- New Playing Kit delivered for both teams
- New Club T-Shirts
- Renewed sponsorship from the Walkabout Wimbledon
- Sponsorship from Prize Placements
- Women's Hawks Netball team founded and won the premiership
in their first season
- Women's Hawks Touch Rugby team
- Sam Parkinson winning BARFL Best and Fairest
- Runners-Up in the Premiership
- A number of new players at the club including EUs
who will be around for years to come
- Improved content on the web site
- AFL promotion run at the Walkabout Wimbledon and
generating lots of interest in the club
See you all in 2005 = THE YEAR OF THE HAWKS
